Wash and soak lentils for 1 hour. Take a pressure cooker. Add water, all lentils,salt and turmeric powder. Close the lid and cook dal on medium heat for 2 -3 whistles. Switch off the flame. Let it cool down.
Now take a non stick pan heat Butter or ghee.Add cumin seeds,curry leaves and asafoetida.Saute it. Now add garlic,ginger green chilli and onion. roast it until it becomes light brown. Then add chopped tomatoes and red chilli powder. Cook until tomato pieces become tender.
Now add cooked dal in the pan. Mix it. Adjust the consistency of water and salt. Cook for 3-4 minutes.add garam masala (optional) switch off the flame. Transfer the cooked dal in a bowl.
Meanwhile take a tadka pan and heat 1 tbsp ghee in it. Add sliced onion roast until becomes crispy then add dried red chilli and pinch hing.Stir for a few seconds then add this tempering tadka over cooked dal. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
