Rainbow Braided Bread

Ingredients

Serves : 5
  • 1½ tablespoon instant yeast


  • 3/4 cup warm water


  • 1/4 cup sugar


  • 1 large egg and 3 egg yolks


  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil


  • 1/4 cup honey


  • 1 tsp salt


  • 3¾ cups bread flour


  • 6-8 drops Gel food color or as per choice

Directions

  • Warm water in microwave for a minute on high power.
  • Combine yeast with 1 tsp sugar and warm water in a large mixing bowl or stand mixer bowl. Leave aside for 10 minutes for the yeast to bloom (froth).
  • In another bowl, combine sugar, oil, honey, egg, and egg yolks. Whisk well till its homogeneous.
  • Mix egg mixture with yeast well.
  • Add flour 1 cup at a time to the wet ingredients till all flour is used up. Knead well.
  • Knead the dough well (at least 15 minutes) till its soft and pliable.
  • Divide dough equally in 6 parts (weigh them for accuracy if preferred).
  • Add drops of food color to each section of dough. Knead the colors well in to the dough.
  • Apply oil to the dough and keep them covered with cling film till doubled in size (about 2 hours).
  • For braiding the dough-- Roll each dough ball in long vertical log of equal length. Place them in order of rainbow (if desired).
  • Overlap ends of each log and pinch them together. Now take the extreme right log and overlap it so that its on the extreme left position.
  • Similarly, take the second log on left and overlap it so that its on the extreme right.
  • Next, take the second log on right and overlap to left and place first log on right in the middle of the logs.
  • Take second log on left and overlap it so that its on right side and place the first log on left in the middle of the logs. Repeat the process alternating sides till you reach the end.
  • Tuck the ends in and pinch them together.
  • Leave the dough in a warm place to rise for at least an hour.
  • Preheat oven to 175 Deg C. Arrange the dough on a baking tray lined with ovenproof parchment paper.
  • Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes and then remove from the oven. Leave it for 10 minutes and then transfer to wire rack to cool thoroughly.
  • Slice the bread only when it's cooled.
