Sago khichidi/Sabhudana khichidi /Javarasi uppuma

Sago khichidi or Sabhudana khichidi or Javarasi uppuma is a favourite and popular dish during the fasting days of Navarathri and Mahashivarathri and Ekadashi. It is very nutritious, delicious and easy to prepare. The Sago pearls may vary in size. If you prepare this khichidi using the small Sago pearls then you need to soak for 15 minutes else you can soak for 2 to 3 hours overnight. As it has peanuts and potatoes it is very tasty.

Ingredients

Serves : 3
  • 1 1/2 cups sago pearls or sabhudana


  • 1/2 cups peanuts


  • 2 nos potatoes


  • 2 nos green chillies


  • 1/4 inch ginger


  • 2 sprig curry leaves


  • 1 tsp salt


  • 2 tsp sugar


  • 2 tsp lemon juice or vinegar


  • 1/4 cups fresh grated coconut


  • 1 tsp jeera seeds


  • 1/2 tsp rye or mustard seeds

Directions

  • Soak sago in 1 cup of water overnight for 2 to 3 hours then remove from water and allow it to dry on a towel.
  • Now roast the peanuts on a tava for a few minutes till it turns brown. Now grind it in a dry grinder or blender.
  • Now mix the sago or Sabhudana with sugar and salt. Now boil the potatoes and allow it to cool. Now peel the outer layer or skin
  • Now in tava heat oil when it is hot add jeera seeds and when it splutters add the roasted and powdered peanuts. Add the curry leaves and green chillies and grated ginger. Saute for a few minutes.
  • Now add the mashed potatoes and then add the sago pearls or Sabhudana.
  • Now add the fresh grated coconut and then serve with chilled fresh yogurt.
