Sweet delicacies made out of rice and jaggery is very popular in South India. These sweet dishes are made during the Navarathri festival as an offering to the Goddess. Sweet rice dishes include sweet rice and jaggery dosa, sweet rice and jaggery kheer and sweetened rice and jaggery payasam. Today we are preparing sweet rice appams that are exclusively made during the festive season of Navarathri in Karanataka.

Ingredients

Serves : 4
  • 1 cups raw rice ( l have used ponni raw rice) soak it in water for 2 to 3 hours.


  • 3/4- 1 cups jaggery preferably in powdered form


  • 1/4 cups flattened rice or poha soak it 20 minutes before grinding the rice.


  • 1/2 tsp cardamom or elaichi powder


  • 1 cups sunland sunflower oil

Directions

  • Now grind the soaked raw rice, poha, powdered jaggery and powdered cardamom powder
  • While grinding the rice don't add excess water. The batter should not be watery. It should be thicker than dosa batter.
  • If it is too thick add 1 to 2 teaspoons of water
  • Now heat oil in a tava and pour the batter with a spoon or ladle
  • Now fry the appams turning them both sides till the become golden in color.
  • Now place them on a tissue paper or paper towel.
