Vermicelli upma

  • 1 cup vermicelli

  • 3-4 tbsp oil

  • 1 medium sized finely chopped onion

  • 1 medium sized finely chopped tomato

  • 1 finely chopped green chilli

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds (optional)

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt or as needed

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1/4 tsp garam masala

  • 1 cup water or as required

  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice (optional)


  • firstly, roast 1 cup vermicelli in 1 tbsp oil till it turns golden brown. Once done keep it aside. Note= If you are using roasted vermicelli them you can skip this step.
  • To the same pan add remaining oil. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. let them splutter.
  • Add onion and saute slightly. Add tomato and green chilli. Saute them for 1 minute. Note= Add vegetables of your choice to make upma more nutritious.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Mix it.
  • Add roasted vermicelli and garam masala to the pan mix it and let it fry for 1 minute. Once done Add required water. stir well. cover it and let it cook for 3-4 minutes or until water evaporates. Note= Cook the semiya till they are just soft. overcooking vermicelli turns them mushy.
  • Switch off the flame add lemon juice and finely chopped coriander leaves (optional). Serve immediately Enjoy 😊
