Urad Dal With Potato-Poppy Seed Curry (Biulir Dal , aloo-posto In Bengali)

  • Urad Dal (Biulir Dal)- 1cup

  • Ginger paste- 1teaspoon

  • Green chillies - 2-4

  • Whole red chilli - 2-3

  • Cumin seeds- 1/2 teaspoon

  • Fennel seeds-1/2 teaspoon

  • Bengali Five Spice - 1teaspoon

  • Bayleaf - 2-4

  • Poppy seed paste - 1/2 cup

  • Salt-Sugar- 2-3 tablespoon or As per taste

  • Mustard oil - 150 ml

  • Coriander leaves (chopped)- 2-3 tablespoon


  • For making bengali style Urad Dal- dry roast urad dal for 1-2minutes, boil with 2cups of water, 1teaspoon salt, 1 pinch turmeric powder, 1 slitted green chilli in a pressure cooker,,on medium heat.. After 5 whistles, turn off the heat and let it cool completely
  • Heat 3 tablespoon mustard oil, add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, 1 whole red chilli and 1 bayleaf.. fry them for 1 minute
  • Add ginger paste and pinch of turmeric powder and salt.. so that it'll never come to you
  • Add boiled urad dal.. add some more water if needed..
  • Check the seasoning.. if needed then add some more salt and sugar
  • Bring it to boil properly
  • Add chopped coriander leaves.. turn off the heat.. serve hot.
  • For Potato-Poppy Seed Curry (Aloo posto)- Heat 2-3 tablespoon mustard oil.. add bengali five spice or paanch foran, 2 whole red chillies, 1-2 bayleaf.. let them fry properly
  • Add diced cubed-cut raw-cleaned potatoes.. fry them for 2 minutes
  • In a blender add 2-3 tablespoon poppy seed, 2 green chillies and some water.. make a fine-smooth paste
  • Add this poppy seed paste to the fried potatoes.. add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder.. mix them well.. and fry until oil separates and raw smell of poppy seed paste has fully gone
  • Add some water(1/2 cup) to cook potatoes properly
  • Add 2 slitted green chillies.. after potatoes are done check the seasoning, add required salt-sugar
  • Finally, turn off the heat, and add 2 teaspoons of raw mustard oil to it.. cover and let them cool.. Potato-Poppy Seed Curry ( Aloo posto ) is to be served with steamed rice and the prepared Urad Dal (Biulir Dal).
