  • 2 cups kale chane (black chickpeas soaked overnight and boiled)

  • 1 nos for the masala : chopped onion

  • 1 nos bay leaf

  • 2 nos dried red chillies

  • 1 tsp mustard oil

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 2 cups for the spiced water: water (same water in which you have boiled the chickpeas)

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder

  • 2 tsp amchoor powder

  • 1 tsp red chili powder

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tbsp gram flour

  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida

  • 1 tsp salt as per your taste


  • mix all the ingredients mentioned under the spiced water and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a wok and add bay leaf, cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add dried red chillies and onions and saute till onions are little soft. Dont let them change colour.
  • Then add in the spiced water kept aside and let it cook for about 3 to 4 minutes stirring continuously
  • Now add kale chane (black chickpeas) and cook it on low to medium heat for about 10 to 12 minutes till right consistency is reached.
  • Serve kale chane ka khatta with steamed rice and salad.
