Description

Chapati or poli or Roti is a traditional Maharashtrian dish. Chapati or roti is being prepared in the morning or afternoon or in the night and served along with tea applying lots of ghee or with subji/Bhaji or even with chutney. In remote locations of Maharashtra and Konkan region, people usually have healthy breakfast which includes, Bhakari-Techa, Bhakari Pithle, or Chapati Bhaji, Chai-Chapati etc. It is a very good and healthy food option for kids. It can be served with bhaji or Jam or Ghee-sugar. Quick to make and always taste best when eaten hot and fresh.

Ingredients

Serves : 4
  • Wheat Flour – 2 cups + 1/4 cup for flouring work surface.


  • Ghee/oil – 1 tablespoon for kneading + 2-3 tablespoon for brushing the top


  • Salt -1/4 teaspoon


  • Water - 1/2 cup or as required for kneading

Directions

  • Chapati/Roti/Poli - In a bowl take Wheat flour, salt and ghee. Mix well.
  • Add water slowly at a time knead it until firm and elastic. Cover and keep aside for 30 minutes.
  • Divide dough into 8-9 equal parts. Shape them into a smooth ball.
  • Dust rolling board with some wheat flour. Roll dough ball into a small 3-inch circle. Apply some ghee and sprinkle some wheat flour. Fold it in the center. Fold it again in the center to form a triangle. Press the edges properly.
  • Roll it again into a thin roti or circle about (6-7” diameter).
  • Heat nonstick pan or griddle.
  • Place chapati/Roti on it. Let it cook till bubbles appear on the top. Cook on medium-low flame.
  • Flip it over and let it cook for few seconds.
  • Flip it again and cook until light brown spots appear on both the sides. Press in between with the help of spatula for even cooking.
  • Apply some ghee on both the sides.
  • Once chapati cooked and puffed up, transfer it on a plate or casserole. Cover and keep aside. Or serve hot with any bhaji or curry. Or apply some jam or butter or ghee-sugar, roll it and serve to the kids.
