Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. when it splutter add cinnamon stick, bay leaf and ginger garlic paste. saute for a minute.
Meanwhile , pressure cook black chana for 3 whistles with 2.5 cup of water and 1 tsp salt.
When the raw smell of ginger garlic goes away add chopped onion and salt. Let the onion turn golden brown.
Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilly powder, cumin powder and gently mix it.
Take out some of the black chana and grind it coarsely. Add it into the tomatoes when the oil starts separating.
Transfer the chana into the pan and mix it gently (reserve the water). cover for a minute.
Add the chana masala or meat masala and mix it. Next add the reserved water and bring it to boil.
serve hot with rice and sliced onion.
