Today I am making a Malabar dish .Malabar recipes are very famous for its unique taste and flavor.Today I am giving you the recipe of Malabar style fish curry or Kerala red spicy fish curry which is usually paired with steamed rice. Hope you will enjoy this traditional fish curry or traditional Kerala fish curry recipe also for sure. So here is the recipe for Kerala style red hot fish curry/ Malabar fish curry / Ayala mulakittathu .

  • 1.Mackerel - 2 big sized (sliced and cleaned

  • 2.Onion - 1 big sized (finely chopped)

  • 3.Tomato - 1 big sized (finely chopped)

  • 4.Green chiliies - 3 to 4 (sliced0

  • 5.Curry Leaves - 2 spring

  • 6.Fenugreek seeds- 1/2 teaspoon

  • 7.Coconut Oil. - 2 to 3 tablespoon

  • 8.Tamarind - 1 gooseberry sized (soaked in 1 cup of hot water)

  • 9.Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon

  • 10.Kashmiri chilli powder- 1 1/2 teaspoon

  • 11.Red chilli powder - 1 1/2 teaspoon

  • 12.coriander Powder - 1 1/2 teaspoo

  • 12.Salt as per taste - 1 -2 tsp

  • 14.Warm Water 1 to 1/12 cup


  • Note : Usually in malabar area the fish curry is making in mud pot.If it is not avilable you can
  • use any other pot.
  • Heat a mud pot,make the flame into low and add 3 tablespoon of coconut oil.Whn it became hot add the fenugreek
  • seeds and stir it for a minute.After it add the chopped garlic and saute till it became light golden shade.
  • Then add the onion and green chillies along with some curry leaves and saute till the onion become transparent.
  • Make the flame into low and add the turmeric powder and saute it for a minute.Next add the all masalas one by one
  • along with half teaspon of salt and mix everything for 2 minutes.After it we can add the tomato and smash it with
  • the spatula and mix all well.Cook it for 2 minutes in a low flame.Then add the tamarind water along with 1 cup
  • of warm water,cover and boil it for 5 minutes.Open again add salt if needed and add the fish pieces one by one.
  • After adding it don't stir the curry,gently press and mix.Cover and cook for 5 minutes.In between open it and
  • give it a mix.When its ready add some curry leaves and coconut oil top of it and off the flame.You can close it
  • for an hour before serving,it will give you a nice flavor.You can serve it with steamed rice.
