Rice steam cake with green gram curry


Puttu, rice steam cake, with green gram/ Payaru is a very popular breakfast combination in Kerala. It is simple to make and a healthy, protein rich combination. Here I am sharing the recipe of a simple green gram (Payaru/moong daal) curry.

Serves : 2
  • 100 gms green gram

  • 1-2 nos onion

  • 2-3 nos garlic cloves

  • 1-2 nos green chilly

  • 1-2 pinch turmeric

  • 1 pinch chilly powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2-3 tbsp for seasoning:oil

  • 1-2 nos dry red chilies

  • 1 sprig curry leaves

  • 1-2 tsp mustard seeds


  • Wash and soak the green gram in water for half an hour.
  • Pressure cook the green gram with sliced onion, garlic, green chilly, a pinch of turmeric and salt.
  • In a pan, burst mustard seeds, add sliced onion, dried chilies and curry leave, saute well.
  • When done, add a pinch of red chilly powder and saute . When the raw smell is give, add the cooked green gram. Add water depending on how thick or thin you want the gravy.
  • Serve with Puttu & papad.
