Ingredients

Serves : 6
  • 1 cups brown rice / kaikuthal arisi


  • 100 gms toovar dhal


  • 100 gms tender drumstick leaves / murungai ilai


  • 100 gms curry leaves / kariveppilai


  • 1 tsp coconut oil


  • 1 tsp gingelly oil


  • 2 tbsp channa dal/bengal gram


  • 1 tsp mustard seeds


  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida


  • 6 nos small onions


  • 5 nos red chillies


  • 4 tbsp grated coconut


  • 4 nos tomatoes


  • 50 gms curry leaves


  • 4 nos garlic cloves (optional)

Directions

  • Grind the small onions, tomatoes, garlic, curry leaves, coconut grated, by adding some water to a smooth paste and keep aside.  The above ground paste should be of 3 cups measure to boil the brown  rice thuvar dhal powder
  • Wash the brown rice well, drain the water completely and spread over a cloth.
  • Wash and soak toovar dal for half an hour.
  • Wash the drumstick leaves and curry leaves well  drain it and keep it aside.
  • Drain the water, spread over a cloth and powder into rava form in a blender or in a mixer.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and when it crackles add Bengal gram, , asafoetida and saute till it turns golden brown. 
  • Then add the ground tomato paste mixture which is of 3 cups measure.
  • Add required salt and bring it to boil. 
  • When it starts boiling add the washed and drained drumstick leaves and curry leaves.
  • Add  coarsely powdered brown rice thuvar  dal rawa mixture.
  • Stir continuously from the bottom without any lumps.
  • When all the water is absorbed cook for few more minutes at a lower flame .
  • Remove from fire and allow it to cool for sometime .
  • Make oval sized balls and steam for fifteen minutes .
  • Yummy healthy iron rich drumstick curry  leaves / murungai ilai  karuveppilai kozhukkattais are ready to serve.
  • Serve hot with sambar or chutney .
