Ingredients

Serves 5

  • Cheruparippu (moong dal) (approximately 1 cup) 100 gms

  • Grated coconut 1/2 cups

  • Jeera 1/2 tsp

  • green chilli 2-3 nos

  • turmeric powder 1/2 tsp

  • Ghee/coconut oil 2-3 tsp

  • Water 1/2 litre

  • Small onion 3-4 nos

  • Mustard seeds 1 pinch

  • Red chilli 2 nos

  • Curry leaves 1 sprig

  • Salt 1 pinch

Directions

    Grind together coconut, jeera, green chilli and turmeric powder with 1 tbsp water to a smooth paste

  • 02

    Roast the moong dal in a pressure cooker for 4-5 mins on low flame, till you get the roasted smell

  • 03

    Add 3 cups water to the roasted dal

  • 04

    Mix well

  • 05

    Cover the cooker and pressure cook for 8-10whistles on full flame

  • 06

    Switch off the gas and let the pressure drops naturally

    Mash the cooked dal using a wooden spoon or you can just run it in a food processor or blender for a few seconds

    Add ground paste, salt and ½ - 1 cup water to the mashed dal

  • 09

    Let it cook on low flame for 5-7mins

  • 10

    Remove from heat

    Heat oil/ghee in another pan and splutter mustard seeds

  • 12

    Add small onion, curry leaves and red chilli

  • 13

    Fry till small onion becomes golden brown

  • 14

    Pour over cooked dal

  • 15

    Serve with rice and pappad, wait

    don't start eating

  • 17

    drizzle some ghee on the curry,ready to serve
