Sweet Pongal


Special dish which is made during the Tamil festival of pongal. However, it's quite filling and can be enjoyed otherwise too.

Serves : 3 serving
  • 1 Cup rice

  • ½ Cup green gram

  • 1 Cup milk

  • 3 Cups jaggery

  • 4 Tablespoons ghee

  • 2 Tablespoons cashewnuts

  • 2 Tablespoons raisins

  • 5 cardamom (powdered)

  • 2 cloves (powdered)

  • 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon (powdered)

  • 1 nutmeg(powdered)

  • 2 1/2 Cups water


  • Cook rice and green gram in milk and water.
  • In a saucepan, put jaggery and pour the water. Heat it and let the jaggery melt in the water.
  • If there are any impurities, remove them and continue heating the jaggery syrup. Heat it till it's a little sticky.
  • Add the cooked rice and dal to jaggery. Add the powdered cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Mix all thoroughly.
  • Heat the ghee and fry the cashews and raisins in it. Add it to the pongal.
  • Switch off the heat and serve the sweet pongal hot or cold.
